Philadelphia Phillies extinguish New York Mets 9-4 to take an unassailable 2-0 lead – MLB Update
The Philadelphia Phillies reiterated their command over the league this season when they thumped the New York Mets 9-4 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to bring up their 83rd win of the season on Tuesday, August 23.
The Phillies have built a reputation for the bull-pen this season and Vance Worley lived to it in his seven epic-innings from the mound. Worley struck-out nine batters and gave away just one run in a total of 109 pitches, 76 of which were strikes. His performance
further improved his earned-run average to 2.65 and earned him his ninth win of the season with just a solitary loss to his credit thus far.
The Phillies have not been the best batting outfit this season but two four-run innings shunned all criticism that their batting might hinder their path to the World Series.
Shane Victorino provided Philadelphia a dream start with a massive 426 feet home-run towards the favoured left field before John Mayberry Jr. replicated Victorino’s hit for a three-run homer towards left field, allowing Placido Polanco and Chase Utley to
complete their runs form and take an imposing four-run lead on the weary Mets.
Worley was impressive on the plate too as he added two runs for the home side apart from dictating terms from the mound. His first run came in the fourth inning when Polanco pulled the ball towards left field before Victorino’s RBI effort in the fifth inning,
a triple to centre field brought up his second run.
Jonathon Niese was not able to produce his best from the mound as he leaked eight runs amid ten hits in just four innings to lose his eleventh start this season with as many wins to his credit so far. He was hammered twice by the Phillies’ in his stretch
to further deteriorate his earned-run average to 4.40 for the season.
The Phillies are now just 17 wins away from a hundred wins this season which, given their form, is not a distant possibility.
Philadelphia leads the three-game series 2-0 with the third game scheduled for Wednesday, August 24.
