Philadelphia Phillies finally complete opening day roster as regular season starts - MLB Update
Joe Savery receives a call as Philadelphia Phillies finish off with deliberations over their Opening Day roster. Manager, general manager and whole staff stood before reporters announcing the names.
Declaration triggered shocks of happiness to players like Savery, Michael Stutes and Pete Orr. For Savery in particular, it’s a dream come true as he has been working since 2011 and has finally got his way to where he can only fantasise a couple of years
back.
According to team management, the kind of role he has been assigned is a fruit of his endurance in last couple of years. They say his contribution in the last half of 2011 season was compelling and was indicative of what he possessed next year for the side.
Time has now come for him that he launches his best in 2012.
“It’s a great story,” said general manager Rubén Amaro. “The guy really worked hard to get himself back to being a major-league caliber pitcher. He helped us last year at the end of the year, came a long way, and we feel like he’s got the stuff to be able
to help us.”
While he basks in happiness, Hector Luna and Raul Valdes will be disappointed for not making to the roster. As they have been sent to Triple A Lehigh Valley, they will do well to assert their credentials there and win back confidence of management.
Unfortunate for Luna that he will not find a chance to strengthen his ordinary career stats. His .265 batting average is unimpressive and 86 RBIs are not reflective of anything substantial and thus he will have liked to get an opportunity to revive them.
Similar is a case with Raul Valdes, whose forgettable 4.78 career ERA will remain unchanged for as long as he is not in action at Major League again.
As Phillies recorded a thumping 7-2 victory against Pittsburgh Pirates, their confidence on opening day will certainly be high.
Especially under a fact that their starter Cole Hamels spent a tremendous time on the mound, taking strike-outs cheaply and beating batters time and again. He, along with many other players on the roster can lift Phillies to something memorable in the 2012
Major League Baseball regular season.
