Philadelphia Phillies hold talks with B.J. Upton's agent – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies know that centre fielder B.J. Upton is essential for them in the outfield.
“We had a lot of interesting conversations, We have some desirable young players based on our conversations,” Phillies’ GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said late Thursday afternoon as he told the media with much detail regarding the recent development about Upton.
As Upton’s becomes free agent, the Phillies' management is trying to convince his agent that Philadelphia is the right place for him.
“Free agency is good because I’d rather keep our players, I’d rather keep the depth if I could,” Amaro said.
Upton recent past season’s performance is also in consideration as Phillies also know that he is one of the few Major League players who hit 28 homers on a hitting average of .246.
His performance had a touch of offensive approach in it was appreciated while all the Major League teams now are taking interest in his free agency.
He played for the Tampa Bay Rays in recent past season while when during the first week of negotiation talks with the free agents, Upton’s agent reportedly asked too much money. However, as the Rays declined any further extension, the other leading teams started to talk with his agent and potentially believed they will agree on a mutual understanding with Upton and his agent.
“The asking prices are always very high early, Once you get signings that set markets, they tend to get higher or lower depending on the quality of the player and needs.” said Amaro in detail about the current state of the free-agent market.
Along with many National and American League franchises, the Phillies are also optimistic to land the seven-year Major League veteran into their franchise for next couple of seasons.
Recent reports also showed that Phillies' front office will be offering a big contract to Upton. The player is young and still possesses extraordinary skills. If he does come to the Phillies franchise, his arrival will work both ways.
First it will give Upton the right level of confidence and secondly the Phillies will also benefit as their outfield will be stronger in the coming seasons.
