Philadelphia Phillies lose 3-5 to New York Yankees in 2012 Spring Training – MLB Update
Starter Vance Worley succumbs to the mighty New York Yankees in the first inning as the Philadelphia Phillies lose 3-5 at Bright House Networks in Clearwater, Florida on March 23, 2012 during their Grapefruit League Spring Training contest.
Working with his change-ups and trying to invent new pitches, Worley was dismayed at four consecutive hits he was thrashed. He threw for a massive six innings and though he took seven strike-outs also in the process, he gave up seven hits and three earned
runs.
"That's exactly how I'm looking at it. They want me to develop another pitch and now is the time to do it," he said. "I can't just go into the season and expect to pull it out of my pocket, you know?"
All in all, Phillies will be happy with Worley who they saw spend a huge amount of time on the mound. However, their reliever Michael Stutes looked fairly mediocre with his throws as he pitched one inning and gave three hits and one earned run.
Yankees went on a rampage in their very first inning, adding three runs. Afterwards they just had to add two more runs in the seventh and eighth to record victory. Meanwhile, resistance came off late from the Phillies but it was not enough.
While Yankees employed just two pitchers, Phillies send four of them to the mound.
Yankees’ starter Hiroki Kuroda kept his promising Spring Training show palpable as he managed three strike-outs in giving up just one run in over five innings he pitched.
Although Yankees' closer who followed him, David Phelps conceded two earned runs including a homer, he never let the batters grab a victory from him.
John Mayberry was one of three players from Phillies’ side who contributed one RBI. Their catcher, Erik Kratz struck one hit in one at-bat while bringing one RBI.
As regard to Yankees, their second baseman, Robinson Cano drew two RBIs in four at-bats and completed one run. Eric Chavez also hit for a RBI single in three at-bats he came across.
Phillies have registered their 11th loss with this game. Despite the fact that they have one of the best pitchers in the form of Roy Halladay, they have yet to find their way out to record a reasonable amount of victories in Spring Training.
