Philadelphia Phillies lose 3-6 to Detroit Tigers in Spring Training - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Scott Elarton’s solid performance falls short of saving the club from losing 3-6 to Detroit Tigers at Joker Merchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida on March 25, 2012 in their Grapefruit League contest.
Phillies took two run lead in first and as Tigers managed just one run in same inning, still trailing by one run, next five innings were to see Phillies’ lead intact. However just as they will start to entertain feelings of victory, Tigers turned things
around in just two innings, adding one and three run in sixth and seventh inning respectively.
What the Phillies will be happy about is the way their starter, Elarton, kept the Tigers to just two hits in four innings he pitched. Although he gave up four walks, his long presence on the mound and ability to keep batters guessing shows his potential
impact during regular season.
Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander made a rare comeback that one experiences from pitchers. After giving away runs in beginning, restoring his best becomes extremely difficult.
However as soon as Verlander sensed that he is going the wrong way, he immediately consulted with his coach and then came back, only to startle batters with his improved pitches.
"I left some pitches up," Verlander said while explaining how wrong he was at the start. "I started working in the second and third getting my chest over my body a little bit and that seemed to help. I got away from that a little bit in the first and I felt
it."
In six innings, he allowed two runs, seven hits while bringing three strike-outs. Tigers’ reliever who followed him namely Phil Coke pitched one scoreless inning, taking two strike-outs.
One of an important things coming out in the game was nine hits, two more than seven hits of the Tigers, by Phillies and yet not finding their way out to score more runs. Tigers’ base runners with a fewer number of hits made most of them by completing runs.
So far Phillies have recorded more wins than any other team of their group in regular season. With 10 victories so far, they have much to feel pride of in Spring Training even if they failed to win today’s game.
