Philadelphia Phillies lose Cody Ross to Arizona Diamondbacks-MLB Update
Cody Ross becomes the latest outfielder that failed to sign contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, despite going through negotiations with them.
Earlier, B.J. Upton joined the Atlanta Braves after the Phillies could not offer him what he was asking for.
This offseason has been strange, with regard to the way the Phillies’ management showed tentativeness.
Despite having the pressing need for some outfielders, they have shown a reluctance in signing free agents.
The Phillies are considered to be one of the financially strong teams. Which is why it is confusing for many as to why they stayed away from the free agent market this year.
It was reported the couple of weeks ago that the Phillies want to acquire Cody Ross.
As the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed him instead, it appears the Phillies are unwilling to meet aspirations of the free agents.
That kind of attitude of the management can be concerning for their fans, as they fancy return of the glory of the division title during the 2013 season.
If appropriate measures are not taken, the club cannot change what happened the last season.
The Phillies could not defend their division crown in the 2012 season, which means failure in another will be disheartening for the fans.
What is unfortunate for the Phillies is that the kinds of outfielders that are left in the market after exclusion of Ross, Upton and Josh Hamilton do not possess extra ordinary credentials.
It is due to this reason that the Phillies can bear the cost of not agreeing to a deal with one of them.
Ross might have liked the Phillies, but the fact they were against what he demanded kept him away from the club.
More likely, the Phillies are going to make a compromise now. By signing someone who is incompetent to fulfil their needs, they can put their 2013 season campaign at risk.
As their General Manager, Ruben Amaro Jr. pointed out, the club desperately requires a powerful hitter, who can ensure production consistently.
It is difficult to unearth reasons why the Phillies could not develop consensus within their organisation to spend a huge amount of money this year.
As per the general assessments of the experts, the club has found the majority of the free agents this year worthless to pursue.
