Philadelphia Phillies lose to Pittsburgh Pirates 7-11 – MLB Recap
The Philadelphia Phillies lost to Pittsburgh Pirates 7-11 in the third game of their four-game regular series encounter on Wednesday, June 27 at Citizens Bank Park in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
Pirates from start of the game started a decent run and gained six runs lead into fifth. On the other hand, their pitchers gave no chance to the Phillies batting line-up to score freely and kept them under pressure.
Phillies with first innings two runs, also started well, but later they just could not find the right areas to score and remained under pressure while eventually losing the game with a big margin.
"There were doubts about our bullpen, We felt like with what we had in the minors, this could give us more flexibility. But it backfired. We got lit up. We have to get our bullpen straightened out," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said on his team’s poor performance which never showed any toughness against the Pirates.
Chase Utley was the only player from the Phillies’ roster who showed some resilience with his one run on three hits along with one RBI on his five at-bats.
Later in the game Utley stated in the media on his performance and different aspects of his team-mates’ performance. He said in detail and highlighted some facts of Phillies defeat, "It was a good first step, but obviously winning would've been ideal, It was pretty exciting, The fans were awesome and it was nice to hit the ball hard my first at-bat."
According to experts, the Phillies lost the game due to their pitchers’ poor performance. From starter Raul Valdes to relief pitcher Joe Savery and closer Chad Qualls, together they all went for eleven runs that proved disastrous in the end.
Valdes finished his two innings spell with two hits and three runs along with three earned runs. Savery gave five runs and Qualls received three runs and three hits.
On the statistics table, both Pirates and Phillies are struggling at the moment. Phillies are at bottom in the National League East while the Pirates are carrying a .533 winning percentage which is not at all appropriate to qualify for the post-season.
