Philadelphia Phillies lose to San Francisco Giants 2-7 as Vance Worley leaks runs - MLB Update
Despite the fact the starter Vance Worley strikes-out nine, he is unable to avoid the loss as the Philadelphia Phillies face an overwhelming 2-7 defeat against the San Francisco Giants on July 20, 2012 in the first game of the three match series at Citizens
Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The presence of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard in the line-up is unable to reverse the fate of the Phillies. One was expecting that in the second half of the season they will be improved with their injured players back but it seem things are getting worse.
The same problem of witnessing the offence lacking production while the opposition enjoys a run-rampage prevails even now.
Similarly, their relief pitchers have not been any different since start of the second half. Their inability to become infallible during penultimate innings is keeping the club from winning games in which they perform relatively better.
On Friday, Worley was unimpressive as far as leaking runs was concerned.
On one side Worley displayed his dominance in tricking batters into making mistakes, on the other he failed to eschew occasional hits. His outing was more like a game in which a starter keeps horrifying the batters and yet they manage to fetch a victory
out of his throws.
Relief pitcher, Jeremy Horst threw last two innings for Philadelphia. He gave up one run and struck-out two. However, he cannot be blamed for the loss as Giants were already ahead of Phillies by the time he allowed the run. He just substantiated their lead
as opposed to letting them achieve it.
Furthermore, the Phillies witnessed just six hits in the game from their batters. Their first baseman Howard struck one hit in three at-bats.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel was all-praise for Giants’ starter Tim Lincecum. He was impressed by his fastballs, in-particular.
"He had a better fastball tonight," Manuel said. "He threw 89-93 miles per hour and touched 94. He changed speeds and he was locating."
In the next two games of the series, the Phillies will attempt to go all-out and make sure they win as they cannot afford collapsing. They will be hoping that their offence comes up improved in the upcoming games.
