Philadelphia Phillies name Wally Joyner as assistant hitting coach - MLB Update
Following the reports stating that Philadelphia Phillies are looking for an assistant hitting coach, they have announced the name of the person who will be carrying out this job. Wally Joyner will be assisting the hitting coach Steve Henderson.
Phillies finished the regular season with a win-loss record which is not characteristic of them.
They have been performing extremely well in the last many years but during 2012 regular season they could not achieve anything substantial.
Among the reasons why they struggled, miseries of their offence have been reported as their most significant weak-link.
Their hitters battled hard throughout the season and could not produce runs consistently.
Although some of their players suffered injuries, this can hardly be put as an excuse, because their roster hosts extremely expensive players that are supposed to be the back-up of the team at the time of absence of other batters.
Keeping the inability of their batters to step up regularly during the season in view, the Phillies decided to hire hitting assistant coach.
The fact immediately after the conclusion of the season they fired a few coaches and inducted new ones reflects their concerns regarding their hitters.
Team officials believe that since the strategy of using hitting assistants has worked extremely well for number of other organisations, they have followed it right away.
Wally Joyner will be aware of his duties and what the Phillies’ offence needs at the moment.
Phillies’ General Manager Rubén Amaro, Jr. maintains that induction of a hitting assistant will help players immensely. Batters will be able to learn variety of information when there is more than one official available to guide them.
"The system will be better with an assistant in so much that different guys take in information in different ways," Amaro said. "I think it's important for our players to see different points of view and get information in different ways."
Along with changes in coaching staff, Phillies will be addressing other areas in which they showed weaknesses during the season.
They will be looking to fix loop-holes in their bullpen and make sure their starting pitchers stay healthy and fresh for the upcoming season.
