Philadelphia Phillies outclass Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 as Chase Utley and Ryan Howard shine-MLB Update
First baseman Ty Wigginton manipulates a sacrifice fly in the ninth which results in the winning run by the Philadelphia Phillies as they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 on July 23, 2012 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the first game
of the three match series.
Finally, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard together shine on the plate. Both of them struck a home-run on Monday. Their performance was a reminder for the Phillies about how these two players have been keeping the team's offence afloat for the last many years.
Meanwhile, it was not an easy win for Philadelphia as it took the last inning for the club to see their player scoring a winning run. For greater part of the game, Brewers held sway. However, in the last inning the run-rampage that the Phillies managed proved
their undoing.
The Phillies trailed by three runs, entering into the last inning. Thanks to timely singles by Howard and by the catcher Carlos Ruiz, Philadelphia surpassed Brewers’ score.
As far as the pitchers were concerned, the Phillies will be disappointed with their starter Roy Halladay. While generally one expects that Halladay will throw great number of scoreless innings, on Monday he gave up six runs in six innings.
Furthermore, he struck-out three and allowed eight hits.
After the game, Halladay asserted that the poor show on the mound had nothing to do with his fitness. He was just unable to hit the right spot in the strike zone on consistent basis. Halladay was however hopeful that he can come up with improved performances
in upcoming games.
"I feel good," Halladay said. "The results aren't what I want. The execution isn't what I want. I definitely have some work to do but I feel 100 times better."
Meanwhile, Howard believed that the players should make sure that the momentum gained from the victory does not slip away now.
"It's huge. We have to build on that momentum," Ryan Howard said. "We need to take that energy and spread it over nine innings."
As it was the first game of the series, by keeping the momentum up in the next two matches, the Phillies can complete the sweep. It will be interesting to observe how their players perform from now onward.
