Philadelphia Phillies outscore Colorado Rockies 7-4 as B.J. Rosenberg throws scoreless inning-MLB
Relief pitcher B.J. Rosenberg records a win as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies 7-4 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 9, 2012 in the last match of the three game series.
Phillies fought back impressively late in the innings after they trailed by a reasonable number of runs. The top of the third saw the Rockies surging to a three-run lead. Thus given the weak offence that the Phillies had in the match, it was to be no surprise
if they ended up as the losing side.
However from the fifth inning onward they launched a counter-attack. Using the conventional run manufacturing techniques, they sent their base-runners aboard. With the timely singles struck by their batters, the Phillies took the score past the Rockies.
The game was the typical reflection of a come from behind type of victory for a team.
Tyler Cloyd was unimpressive on the mound. For as long as he was on the mound as a starter, he leaked runs and put Philadelphia in a shaky position. He gave up four runs in four innings while he yielded eight hits.
Phillies’ relievers controlled the game well after he left. They completed scoreless innings and kept the Rockies from cutting in to the lead late in the innings.
Jonathan Papelbon carried out the closing job for Philadelphia. By throwing a scoreless last inning, he earned his 32nd save of the season.
"I think we're finally getting some breaks, where I don't think we got a single break the first 80, 90 games of the season," Papelbon said.
Offensively, first baseman Ryan Howard did the bulk of the contribution for the Phillies. He added two RBIs while striking one hit in five at-bats.
The Phillies hammered 14 hits in the game. Generally their offence struggles to strike a great number of hits.
Their confidence will be high after Sunday’s match. They will be trying to keep the momentum going and put up an even better performance in the games ahead.
It will be interesting to see whether the Phillies’ offence can replicate such a consistent show in the remaining games of the regular season.
