Philadelphia Phillies overpower Florida Marlins 6-4 : Major League Baseball
A team effort by the Philadelphia Phillies’ batters and pitchers resulted in the Phillies’ 6-4 victory over the Florida Marlins at Sun Life Stadium in Florida on May 9.
The Phillies’ Manager Charlie Manuel was pleased with the way his team performed tonight. He said after the game, “Our trademark the past four or five years is we play solid defense.”
The Phillies started their game well as Jimmy Rollins hit a solo home run in the first inning. It was considered the second homer for Rollins in the current season. The Marlins took a 2-1 lead in the very first inning when Chris Coghlan and Hanley Ramirez
added two runs collectively. They completed their singles on the two-run double shot from Gaby Sanchez.
The second inning was scoreless for the Phillies but the Marlins extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to the single from Sanchez towards right field. During the third inning, the Phillies’ pitchers and hitters both were on top as the pitchers did not allow
Marlins hitters to take a single run while the batters added three runs and led off the Phillies with 4-3. Ross Gload hit two RBIs singles and went 2-for-3.
Placido Polanco and Ryan Howard both added one run each in the third inning. The scoreboard was still in the fourth inning for both sides. In the fifth inning, Shane Victorino came to play with the bat as he went 1-for-4 and scored a single run on a contribution
with Joe Blanton, who also had a single. At the end of fifth inning, the lead extended to 6-3 for the Phillies.
The Marlins were unable to post a run from the third to seventh inning but Sanchez struck a one-run homer in the eighth inning to cut off their deficit to 6-4. The ninth inning also passed away without score.
The Phillies’ starter Joe Blanton had an impressive day with the ball as he pitched five innings and gave away just three runs on eight hits including three earned runs. He permitted two walks and had two strike-outs.
Blanton said of his game, “They say the double play's a pitcher's best friend, and it really was tonight. It helped me out a lot. Five innings is never what you want to go. But you don't need to come back and throw a complete game after not throwing for
two weeks.”
On the other side, Javier Vazquez was expensive as he threw 4 1/2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with one strike-out.
