Philadelphia Phillies record 5-4 win against Pittsburgh Pirates in Spring Training - MLB Update
Scott Podsednik takes Philadelphia Phillies over the line with his homer in the last inning as they beat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4 in their Grapefruit League contest on March 27, 2012 at Bright House Networks in Clearwater, Florida.
Game was going straight in the favour of the Phillies as they had a four run lead until the seventh.
As if waking up from a slumber, the Pirates suddenly tied the score in the eight by scoring four runs.
The game would have easily entered the tenth inning if it was not for a timely hit by Podsednik that restored Phillies' lead in the game.
Late rise by the Pirates was led largely by their catcher Eric Fryer and right fielder Nick Evans, who both made one hit and contributed one RBI.
Along with them, first baseman, Casey McGehee also stepped up with two hits and one RBI while facing four at-bats.
What played a crucial role in Phillies' victory in the end was six scoreless innings starter Cliff Lee had thrown. He walked one and struck-out three while conceding three hits.
"I'm pretty happy with where everything is right now," Lee said. "One more start and then the regular season, so it's time to get after it."
As soon as Phillies' reliever Antonio Bastardo let them down by giving up three earned runs, their closer Jonathan Papelbon came to their rescue and threw a scoreless ninth inning.
Part of an onslaught the Phillies launched at the start had Pirates’ reliever, Chris Resop, as its victim. As he pitched for just two innings, he was hit thrice. He gave up two earned runs while getting three strike-outs.
Phillies’ right fielder Podsednik has strengthened his chances for getting a spot in regular season opening day line-up. The way he exhibited his ability to strike massive hits and homers has not left manager, Charlie Manuel unimpressed.
"We'll make the decision," Manuel said. "Podsednik hits the ball a little bit harder. He gives you more juice. Pierre is on base more. He has a high on-base percentage. Both of them hit lefties OK."
With this victory, Phillies have now attained 11 wins in total 24 games they have played in Spring Training so far. They will look to continue playing with the same momentum in their upcoming games.
