Philadelphia Phillies relent in 1-5 loss against San Diego Padres - MLB Update
Starter Roy Halladay suffers a decline in his ideal season outings up until the start of this game with a poor show as his side the Philadelphia Phillies are beaten 1-5 by the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego, California on April 21, 2012.
So bad a state has reached that place which used to be a fiefdom of the Phillies is also becoming their graveyard. The defeat was their first since 2008 on this ballpark against Padres, something that explains the extent to which they have lost their competitive
nature.
Halladay, who had been appearing as a rare sign of optimism for the Phillies was unable to stand up this time for them. Walks he gave up were atypical of him as he has been near perfect on this front in the past.
In seven innings he conceded two runs, five hits and while he struck-out five. He permitted four walks. In contrast Cory Luebke, Padres’ starter threw eight scoreless innings and struck-out five.
Phillies’ miserable offence was amply visible from just three hits they drew in 30 at-bats. Neither Jimmy Rollins nor Shane Victorino, their most dependable veterans at the moment, did enough to lift the Phillies in their chase of ever-increasing lead by
the Padres.
Freddy Galvis who has come as a replacement for Chase Utley did show some promise at the start of season has started to experience a decline in the last few games. He went hitless in four at-bats.
Sole run came for the Phillies in the ninth which was the result of a double by Ty Wigginton, which led Rollins to complete the score. However a run in the ninth at the back of four runs trailing cannot prove more than a source of rare consolation a side
can go with after the defeat.
Phillies stand 7-8 in the season so far preceding the Miami Marlins, a side lowest on the table. In terms of number of scores made, Phillies are at the bottom with just 42 runs managed, way lower than the Braves’ 87 runs.
This is an area they will be looking to improve on in the forthcoming games, if a restoration of their last year pride is to become a reality.
