Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Kyle Kendrick agrees to 2-year deal – MLB News
The Philadelphia Phillies have finally agreed with experienced relief pitcher Kyle Kendrick on a two year extension worth $7.5 million replacing the previous deal for a larger one.
Though the deal also includes several incentives and bonuses, but still these details are yet to come out in the media. Another incentive of performance bonuses and awards also was not disclosed in the media.
The deal was finalised after a brief in-house discussion between Kendrick’s agent and the Phillies management. Both parties had also agreed last month on a two year deal but lately the Phillies finally resolved money related issues and prepared another deal for Kendrick pleasing him and his agent to stay connected with the franchise for a longer period.
“Kyle has played some pretty important roles for us, particularly as a starter, but he’s also adapted pretty well to being in the bullpen,” Phillies’ general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “He’s willing to do anything you ask him. He’s done that the last few years. I’m glad for him. And we like the fact we get a little cost certainty out. We do have some insurance as far as our starters are concerned.”
Later, Kendrick also said in the media, “All along I wanted to get two years done. My agent and the team did, too. I’m just happy it worked out. It’s pretty exciting.”
Sources revealed that prior to signing of the new deal, the Phillies management and Kendrick’s agent met on Sunday for a formal discussion but unexpectedly both parties came-out with a new deal of their future relationship.
Kyle Kendrick, who was exceptional last season with the team, played some 34 games for the Phillies. Going 8-6 with a 3.22 ERA, Kendrick started 15 games for the team giving Phillies a healthy support as they won the National League East Championship Division title.
Experts believe as Kyle Kendrick’s contract extension is a good sign for the Phillies. They now can turn their attention towards Spring Training as well as on the next Major League Baseball season.
