Philadelphia Phillies rout Atlanta Braves 6-2 – MLB Recap
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, September 21 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
"I'm proud of them, I've seen times where we could've folded tent. That's a mark of a bunch of guys who love to play and definitely want to win," manager Charlie Manuel said about his team’s performance.
Phillies' pitchers did most of the work and earned a huge victory for their team.
Though the Braves lost this particular game, but they can still get a potential Wild Card entry.
"We knew, Whether the Cardinals win or lose, we still have to go out and win. This is a playoff push. This is what you play for. To be in the hunt with everything we went through this season, it's a fun feeling. I never gave up on anything. That's why you play 162 games," Ryan Howard said about his team’s postseason chances.
From their starting pitchers to relievers, everyone contributed and helped the Phillies to oust the Braves.
Kyle Kendrick pitched 6.2 innings and received only two runs and five hits. He retired six while he maintained his ERA at 3.89.
Relief pitcher Jeremy Horst pitched 0.1 innings and did not receive any run or hit. He stood tall against the Braves' batters and remained consistent with his 1.09 ERA.
Along with pitchers, the Phillies' batters also played well and contributed with their classic performances.
Second baseman Chase Utley scored two runs and smashed one hit along with two RBIs on his three at-bats. He showed good aggressive plays and remained persistent with his .462 slugging percentage.
First baseman Ryan Howard scored one run and smashed one hit on his four at-bats. He also ran for an RBI while he maintained his slugging percentage at .436.
Catcher Carlos Ruiz also played well and showed his offensive hitting on the mound during his three at-bats. He scored one run on two hits along with two RBIs. He literally hammered the Phillies' pitchers with great force while he maintained his slugging percentage at .550 and proved one of the winning factors for his team.
