Philadelphia Phillies run past New York Mets 10-6 as they hammer three home runs - MLB Update
Short-stop Jimmy Rollins homers in the ninth as the Philadelphia Phillies surge to a bombastic 10-6 victory against the New York Mets, in third game of the three match series, at Citi Field, New York, NY on May 30, 2012.
A relative silence at the start turned amok in the ninth, with both sides accumulating nine runs. The Phillies added six runs and the Mets managed three runs in the ninth inning.
Hits were rife in the game. The Phillies connected 14 hits, while the Mets had 12.
Though quiet against the Mets’ starter Dillon Gee, the Phillies pounced upon their relievers. The frustration which was mounting as Gee caused problems was rightly taken out on them.
Come the ninth and the Mets will switch to one option after another, only to find equal disappointment from all of them. At first, the Mets brought Tim Byrdak. Immediately realising that he is prone to meltdown, Ramon Ramirez was handed the job, in the hope
that the Phillies will not solidify their lead.
As he also proved vulnerable, Chris Schwinden was called to throw remaining part of the ninth. It was an apt display of plain helplessness by a side during penultimate innings.
The Phillies will be amply satisfied with the performance of their offence. Hitters who were failing in almost every game earlier are starting to step up and win games for the club.
First baseman Ty Wigginton had another great time on the plate, following a perfect 3-3 outing the other day.
He made two hits in four at-bats on Wednesday. He reached the plate twice as the home run he hammered in the second proved a watershed event as the Phillies ran rampant afterwards. He brought two home runs, along with powerful hits all around the park, later
in the innings.
Cliff Lee started for the Phillies and to his dismay he had another no decision game. He threw six innings and gave up three runs as he struck out seven.
Other than bullpen, the Mets were not far from their best. They did manage quality hits and posted reasonable score. Working out flaws with the bullpen will determine their success in the games to come. The Phillies, on the other hand, will do their best
to keep the momentum afloat for upcoming games.
