Philadelphia Phillies shut-out Atlanta Braves 4-0 at Turner Field - MLB Update
Starter Randall Delgado gives up a homer in the seventh as the Atlanta Braves are shut-out by the Philadelphia Phillies 0-4 on May, 3 2012 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Braves lead in making runs in their Division, but the way they were subdued by the Phillies’ starter speaks of an excellence they had to face in the game.
Joe Blanton brought the Braves’ batters to knees and never allowed them complete a run throughout the nine innings.
Braves had their third-baseman Chipper Jones missing out again. Left knee surgery is wreaking a huge influence on his body and has not rendered him in a position to become a permanent member of his club.
Phillies witnessed their offence shining, in a rare spectacle of fireworks coming off their hitters in the game. Shane Victorino puts aside the jinx building around his stick and went 1-for-4 in the game. He brought two RBIs and completed
one run.
The Pick of the Day was Blanton for the Phillies, who not just got his side to victory, but also rang alarm bells for the opponents ahead in the season.
He proved that even with their ace Roy Halladay out on leave for a few days, the Phillies’ rotation remains among the best in the season.
"I tried to use last night to my advantage a little bit with an early 12 o'clock start today," Blanton said. "I wanted to pound the zone a lot and hope that maybe they were coming out a touch lethargic. I don't know if that was the
case or not."
The Braves on the other hand took a nosedive from an enviable 133 runs they have scored in the season and came across a rare shut-out game in the season.
At the moment the Braves stand second on the table, with their position being vulnerable to the New York Mets, who can at any time take them over.
The game was a true reminder of a kind of an invincible force the Phillies can become if their pitchers draw better run-support.
One will hope that once their injured players Chase Utley and Ryan Howard return, the kind of support their starter received today will become permanent.
