Philadelphia Phillies sign Mike Adams for two-year at $12 million-MLB Update
Relief pitcher, Mike Adams will throw the eighth inning for Philadelphia Phillies in the 2013 season.
He has been included on the roster by the club after a subpar performance of their bullpen during the last season.
Those relievers that pitched seventh or eighth innings for Philadelphia leaked a great number of runs, causing defeats time-and-again.
As per the evaluation of experts, slightly better shows from their part will have helped the club post an impressive winning percentage.
Right from the beginning of the last season, the Phillies were undone by their bullpen.
Though starting pitchers were outstanding sometimes, they could not experience the best results of their efforts.
For example, Cliff Lee, who is considered one of the strongest starting hurlers in the Major League Baseball today, registered a dismal win-loss record during the season, because of meltdowns by relievers of the club.
Lee had a terrific ERA and yet the Phillies piled up losses.
In short, if the Phillies add a couple of quality relievers in the bullpen, the likes of Lee can see sharp improvements in their records.
Addition of Adams by Philadelphia can be seen in light of this.
Adams has the credentials to remove loopholes in the bullpen of Philadelphia, especially because he is renowned for throwing impeccable innings late in the games.
Behind Jonathan Papelbon, he can form a formidable front that can challenge the oppositions.
Adams is upbeat to carry out the role that the Phillies want him to perform.
"I felt this is a very good opportunity for myself," Adams said. "I had an opportunity to go a couple places and close and the opportunity to make the extra incentives. There was an NL East team that was really in on it. It was a tough choice between the
two, but from what I've heard from other players that have been in this organization, what they thought about it, where I think they're headed over the next couple years, that played a huge part into my decision."
His great performance in the upcoming season can result in the extension of his contract beyond 2014.
Otherwise, he will be facing the tough situation of being traded or given a few opportunities in the season.
