Philadelphia Phillies sweep the three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers – MLB News
The Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, July 25, beat the Milwaukee Brewers by 7-6 to sweep the three-game series. At Citizens Bank Park, Jimmy Rollins hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to snatch the victory for the Phillies as Francisco Rodriguez
failed to contain the Phillies hitters.
With the defeat, the Milwaukee Brewers went down further in the National League Central ranking, finding it enormously difficult to exhibit the kind of performance they did last year when the team qualified for the postseason games.
For the team’s reliever – John Axford, this was one of the worst road trips that he remembers.
"I haven't been around the game much, but this is the worst road trip I think I've ever been on, the most disheartening and heartbreaking, too," Milwaukee Brewers reliever Axford said. "All three of the losses here were just really tough."
Since the start, it was the Brewers’ Marco Estrada who struggled to keep the Phillies’ offence in check. In his four inning spell, the starter gave up five runs, allowing eight hits with 4.52 ERA. Phillies’ Vance Worley, on the other hand, merely allowed
three runs in his 5.1 inning spell.
The Brewers were first to score, but the Phillies quickly levelled the score in the second and kept taking the lead up as the hitters literally outplayed the Brewers’ Estrada.
"It shows we haven't given up," said Chase Utley, the player who went to have three hits and three RBIs in the game. "We have some ground to cover, but we have the type of guys who are determined to win."
While the Brewers offence tried to keep pace, taking a lead in the 10th with Aramis Ramirez’s sacrifice fly hit to second, the 6-5 lead could not be maintained.
Carlos Ruiz, coming in the 10th inning hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Rollins then hit an RBI single to steal the show, winning the game by 7-6 for the Phillies. With the win, all of which were surprisingly too close, which ended with
7-6, 7-6, 7-6, the Phillies also swept the three-game series.
