Philadelphia Phillies to maintain highest Major League attendance in upcoming seasons-Part 4
Phillies seem to be heading into the right direction with regard to spotting weak-links that resulted into an unimpressive performance.
Their manager Charlie Manuel elaborated earlier that he could not address psychological aspect of managing players. Had he made the players mentally tougher and ready to stand up against any kind of circumstances, they will have stayed resilient. They will
not have let their motivation drop down in the face of lean periods.
Manuel will have his contract concluded next year, which means he will love to finish his time with the Phillies on a positive note. He will go all out to ascertain that the Phillies wrestle back their crown in the National League East next year.
He is looking to alter his approach toward handling players. He has pledged to indulge more in their activities and watchful of their feelings. Once he is aware of their attitude, he is more likely to issue right instructions to them and give them appropriate
roles in the line-up.
Manuel’s credentials for developing a World Series winning calibre team are doubtless. He spearheaded the Phillies to glory back in 2008. If he can do so then, it is hard to refute as to why he cannot attain the same achievement again.
He knows what it takes to transform a team which has finished the season with a below par performance into a competent unit for the next year.
A manager of his stature often leaves organisations with something to be proud of, just to make sure his brilliance keeps prevailing in the minds of those fans that will not see him in the club again.
A poor performance in the season is a positive sign for the Phillies for the years to come. It will help make the players to not become complacent during the season.
Phillies’ manager Manuel acknowledges that players were satisfied with their success in the last five years. They appeared unconcerned about results during the season at-times.
"When you win five division titles and have the best record in Major League Baseball, [the players] might take it for granted," Manuel said. "They forget the effort and the work they put into winning. It's hard for them to realize what goes into it, because
they start thinking how good we are. "They feel like they can turn it on and off whenever they want. They're getting older, doing less work and maybe aren't as hungry. If you slip some and forget about what it takes, that makes it harder.”
If they win the Division title once again, this will have taken their confidence to such heights which prove counterproductive more often than not.
A bad season is better than a good one if the latter is to dent the side structurally and make the team thrive on false sentiments. Any team which begins building expectations on baseless grounds is destined to fail and takes many years to recover.
Regardless of what happened with the Phillies in 2012, they still are a great unit and very much capable of reclaiming their dominance in the National League East in the next season.
It appears that their fan-base is going to expand as opposed to contracting because there is a general perception that the Phillies are frustrated and upbeat to stand out next year. This is going to enhance the interest of the fans and make them keep an
eye on the Phillies’ activities during the offseason.
