Philadelphia Phillies to make important decisions about remainder of the season - MLB Update
With some of the important players reaching the end of their contract, the Philadelphia Phillies will be deciding their fate soon. Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels are two of them. While exclusion of Hamels, if the club does not pursue him after this season,
will affect them hugely, the case of Victorino is not going to be a big loss.
Furthermore, if the Phillies do not look different in the second half and are unable to reverse the jinx of their losing streaks, important changes will be made by them.
Moving on, as the trade deadline nears; they may induct few prospects in exchange for current players.
Phillies are currently at the lowest position on the National League East Division table. They need something spectacular to happen in the season to improve drastically.
In case this does not happen, manager Charlie Manuel will start thinking to send the players to those clubs that need them more.
First in this regard will be Hamels.
By looking at the performance by him in the season, one can say, many teams will be happy to take Hamels. Furthermore, there are a number of clubs that have everything going perfect for them except for the fact that they lack quality starters. Therefore,
Hamels can be the best fit for their needs.
Similarly, Charlie can trade Victorino.
Meanwhile, the manager will be in consultation with the General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr., regarding the contract renewal with Victorino and Hamels. They are not going to take a long time now to decide about whether to retain or let them enjoy free agency
at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, one of the scouts commented on the chances of success of the Phillies in the second half.
“Sometimes you have to write a year off and say ‘This is not our year,’” said the scout. “The baseball gods are not smiling down. Especially when (Roy) Halladay went down, on top of the bad offense. That put a lot of pressure on a bullpen that had a lot
of question marks.”
Another scout stated that the Phillies’ GM will soon comprehend the reality and will start removing players.
“Ruben is a very smart man. They're very aggressive,” the scout said. “I will not be surprised if several (players) are moved.”
In light of the above statements by the scouts, one can say that the Phillies are going to become a seller in the season.
