Philadelphia Phillies trounce Baltimore Orioles 9-6 as Jim Thome shines on the plate - MLB Update
Designated hitter Jim Thome helps the Philadelphia Phillies snap six-game losing streak as they win 9-6 against the Baltimore Orioles in first game of the three match series on June 8, 2012 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland.
Second inning run-spree by the Phillies initiated their dominance, which remained intact throughout the game. Shane Victorino, Hunter Pence and Thome were architect of the Orioles’ defeat.
Thome, just few days ago, came off the disabled list. He was included in the line-up, despite his poor run of form in the season.
Phillies' manager Charlie Manuel had clarified that Thome will come as designated hitter as part of the plan to witness late-inning hits. He rightly lived up to his role as in five at-bats, he made three hits. His batting average jumps to .200.
Centre-fielder Victorino was the Pick of the Day. Home-run and five RBIs he contributed can serve to respond questions which were being raised at his existence in the line-up.
All through the season, his performance has frustrated the manager. Despite possessing years of experience, he had failed to carry out his role successfully.
The Phillies’ offence generated 12 hits, which is a positive sign, given how poorly it has fared in the season.
Joe Blanton started for the Phillies. He was lucky that reasonable run-support came to his way. Even as he leaked five runs in little more than six innings, he was able to claim the win.
Unlike last game, the Phillies’ bullpen showed great deal of command. Facing a kind of situation where lead was to be protected, apart from one run by Michael Schwimer, all the relievers threw scoreless innings.
Relief pitcher, Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth and recorded his 16th save of the season.
Bullpen has been the Phillies’ Achilles heel, in one way or the other. On number of occasions, their relievers have robbed them of certain victories, by melting down late in the innings.
Orioles also found relievers displaying control and not giving up any run. Nine runs their starter, Jake Arrieta gave up in four innings had actually sealed their fate.
Victory will go a long way in re-energising the Phillies. They will like to keep the momentum going and begin a new journey by winning the series.
