Philadelphia Phillies trounce Washington Nationals 4-2 – MLB news
Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Washington Nationals 4-2 in the second game of their three-match regular series encounter on Tuesday, June 18 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
“Detwiler was matching Lee pitch for pitch until the sixth, He was throwing the ball good,” Nationals manager Davey Johnson said.
With this win, the Phillies also won the series 2-0 with one game remaining.
Starting pitcher Cliff Lee played a key role for the Phillies as he pitched eight solid innings and allowed only two runs on five hits. He allowed two earned runs but he struck out nine Nationals top hitters on his consistent 2.53 ERA.
“I want to win. I signed to win here, If that was misconstrued that I want to play someplace else, that's not the case. I want to play here. If we play fundamental baseball and everyone plays up to their capabilities, we can beat anybody,” Lee said, reiterating
a comment he made last week in Minnesota.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon also played well and tossed a good last inning. He did not receive any run or hit on his 1.69 ERA.
“Looks like his bat is a little quicker, He expects a lot out of himself and he wants to do more. He's starting to relax,” manager Charlie Manuel said of Young.
Along with pitchers, the Phillies hitters also played well and helped their team win the game with great ease. Third baseman Michael Young scored two runs on three hits. He ran for an RBI on his four at bats while he remained consistent on his .390 slugging
percentage.
Centre fielder Ben Revere also contributed with his one run and single hit on four at bats. He showed great commitment and maintained his .309 slugging percentage.
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins added one run on single hit while Ryan Howard ran for an RBI and hammered the Nationals’ pitchers with his persistent .378 slugging percentage.
On the other hand, the Nationals pitchers and batters could not play well throughout the game and lost bitterly in the end. Ross Detwiler pitched six innings and allowed four runs and seven hits on his blistering high ERA of 3.34.
