Philadelphia Phillies vs. Mets washed out, double-header scheduled for Saturday – MLB News
The game between Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets on Friday, September 23 was postponed due to rain and will now be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday, September 24 at Citi Field in New York.
The first game will begin at 1:10 p.m. while the night-game will start at 7:10 p.m.
Jose Reyes, Mets’ seasoned short-stop will be eligible for free agency after this season and has two more days to play at Citi Field after Friday’s game was washed out. Reyes has had an excellent season thus far except for injuries in the latter half that
halted his appearances. There is a possibility that the Mets sign him again for a few more years but had it been a case, there would have been some movement in this regard.
With no indications of an extension with the Mets, it is a bit hard to determine what Reyes might do after the season. Reyes said, "It's going to be interesting to see what's going to happen and everything. But right now I just want to finish all these games
strong and help this team to win the most games that we can."
Known for his speed, Reyes is a home-grown All-Star for the Mets and separating ways at this stage of his career might be difficult for himself and the team.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins expressed that Jose has a lot of things on his mind at this time and that the contract and his injury problems are at the core of it. He said, "I think it's going to be very hard for him," Collins added. "There's going to be huge
distractions. But the one thing I think that he has going in his favour, is that when he crosses those lines, he plays baseball.”
Reyes is a top contender to become the batting champion this season and needs just one point to surpass Milwaukee Brewers’ Ryan Braun to top the chart. A hitting-streak over the next few days might see him win his first batting title.
The Phillies, on the contrary, are winless since grabbing the NL East title and need four wins to establish a MLB record for most wins in a single season. The team has failed miserably as an offensive unit and will now want to pick up on this area, especially
with the post-season approaching.
Philadelphia’s misery, however, doubled when the entire pitching rotation lost over the past week, seeing the Phillies lose a season-worst six consecutive games.
In order to preserve pennant races, MLB will make a decision on the outcome of the game if rain persists.
