Philadelphia Phillies’ young relief pitchers show promise for future – MLB Update
Not able to see the desired performances from the relief pitchers, the Philadelphia Phillies had to make decisive roster moves with regard to their bullpen in the season. While some of their relievers were lost to injuries, there were others who compelled
the management to turn to the Minor League for help. Fortunately, their young relievers show credentials for lifting the team in the years to come.
Meanwhile, apart from Jonathan Papelbon and Antonio Bastardo, the rest of their bullpen has betrayed the club in the season. Whenever quality innings late in the games from relievers were required, they struggled. On various occasions their starter finished
a splendid spell of innings but due to the meltdown by the relievers the club had to face the defeat.
Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel hinted on a number of occasions the cost of mediocrity in their bullpen has made them incur in the season.
Right now, the Phillies are almost out of contention for winning a play-off spot.
New relievers have been introduced by them. Thus, their young relief pitchers have a good opportunity to get acquainted to the environment in the big league so that in the next year they do not have any problem in delivering great performances.
The names like Jeremy Horst, Michael Schwimer and Josh Lindblom can make the Phillies’ bullpen a force to reckon with in the upcoming season. Ever since they have joined, the performance of the bullpen has improved.
Meanwhile, Horst shares the experiences that he has gone through so far in the season. Certainly, he is going to learn from them to become a reliable relief pitcher eventually.
“Each game is different,” Horst said. “At the beginning of the day, you don’t know what situation you are going to be in. You have to start with the same mindset of going through the routine and getting the mind ready, no matter what the situation is so
it doesn’t catch up with you. Winning by five or six or losing by five or six, you can get a little lax. To us, that’s why it’s important to keep the same mentality no matter what the situation is.”
In light of the fact that Philadelphia’s bullpen is strengthening day-by-day, the start of the next regular season the team will be looking to have developed an ideal combination.
