Philadelphia Union lost their last league game 1-0 to New York Red Bulls at the Red Bull Arena on Thursday, October 20.
The loss was not what the Union had expected at the end of a successful season especially which resulted in controversies. Sebastien Le Toux’s equalizer was ruled out on a controversial decision by the assistant referee. The decision was a big debate after
the match.
The Union boss, Peter Nowak, complaint on the controversial decision taken by the assistant referee: “We live in a country that you can criticize everyone, including the president and the federal government, but we cannot criticize the referees. This is
a bad sign going into the playoffs.”
Le Toux took a free-kick just outside the penalty area which bounced between the Zolos defenders Carlos Valdés and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-Califf-c10200 and ended up in the back of the net. Valdes slightly touched the ball but the goal was denied by the assistant referee.
“At the beginning, I just thought it was a foul on Carlos,” Le Toux added. “I only heard after by the coaching staff that it was offside.”
“I didn’t see anything wrong with the goal,” Califf further added to Le Toux’s comments. “Considering we didn’t get any calls all night and for him to take one away that really wasn’t offside was a bit frustrating and disappointing.”
According to the visual evidence both stalwarts were on-side but for a split second and the decision still remains questionable.
The Union had a chance to clinch the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the win but the loss against the Red Bulls left them with an uncertain position in the playoffs.

position.
The two aforesaid league matches will decide whether the Zolos will start their postseason stint on October 27 as a wildcard or October 29 as a direct semi-finalist.
