Philadelphia sports milestone?

I also completely agree about the Wings, Phantoms, Soul, ect... They are just not mainstream and will probably never be.

Joe B - you may be right about Cleveland, I just find our situation unique because we have a team in all four major sports. One thing is for sure though, once we win something it certainly is going to be amazing. I just hope I'm around to see it.

  1. Philly has loyal fans, and yes they do torture themselves a bit, but once they win, it'll be crazy

  2. That's what makes us so fvcking tough, even the pansies in NYC are scared of us...

  3. That's not true!  The Phillys won the World Series in 1980!

  4. WIP is incorrect as there are more then 4 pro sports teams in our city.

    Phantoms won in 2005

    Wings won in 2000

It is easy for WIP to disregard these teams because they are not one of the main 4 sports, but the wings are just as professional for their sport as the NFL and NBA.

  5. But at least they make it fun.We could be like alot of fans out there and jump ship everytime another team does better then our teams. For some reason I thought it would be longer?Maybe were all into S & M so thats why we like it but imagine how Cleveland fans feel. The Indians haven't won a thing in years, the Browns(See Ernest Byner),Cavs have Lebron but who knows if he has a Championship in his future.

Lubers-Right on target regarding the Wings.I was a season ticket holder for 6 years and those were some of the most fun I had ever had at a sporting event with the Gait brothers and Dallas Eliuk however that was a semi pro league. The Gaits were arguably the best in the sport and even they had to have a second job.I'll pretend I didn't read your post about the Phils winning in 83 although if it wasn't for Ripken who knows?I'm kidding of course cause even I missed it when I read your answer this morning.

  6. I could be wrong but they discussed this on WIP today.  Doesn't this mark 99?  If the Phillies were not able to win the World Series this season, that would mark #100.  I could be wrong given that the Phillies were the last championship in 1983.

EDIT: lol, I woke up sober this morning and remembered the name of the correct name of the last championship team here in Philly.

Hartley: It is easy for WIP to disregard them because, no offense to the Wings, Phantoms or Soul, their following is relatively specialized.  You can make a better argument for the Wings than the Phantoms or Soul though because the Wings offer the highest caliber in their sport.  No offense, but outside of their respective season ticket base, interest in all three of those teams ranges from non-existent to casual.  There are well over 100 high school hockey teams in the tri-state area.  Why don't they discuss them on WIP?  Because outside of the players, their families and a select minority people just aren't interested.  Same applies to the Phantoms, Wings and Soul.

  7. Among several aspects that bother me is the fact that the Phillies (formerly of Worcester) are older than every MLB team (except the Reds) essentially making any team that has been established since 1883 an expansion team. In and of itself that means the Local 9 are allergic to World Series titles while every new team is more inclined to win a world pennant. The Marlins have twice as many titles as they do and the Athletics granted us five.  (God, please bring the A's back to Philly!)

The Sixers (formerly of Syracuse) are only 3 years younger than the Warriors and the NBA, and that puts them in the same spot as the Phillies. But they can claim 2 crowns for Philly and the Warriors another 2 while they were here.

The Eagles (formerly of Frankford) came along after the NFL was around for 4 years and have 2 championships to their credit.

And then there's the Flyers. In seven trips to the Finals, they hoisted the hardware twice, while 8 teams younger than they are and two teams that entered the league when they did have won the Cup.

My point is that our teams are either ineptly run, or suffer from delusions of past grandeur. At least I was around during the heyday of the early 1980's. All those second place banners should disappear because the casual fans think they look nice up in the rafters while Big Eddie uses them to hide the dearth of championship banners.

  8. JMM I always enjoy your input.  It is funny who badly some misunderstand the simplest of questions.

It is kind of mind boggling that one of the teams have not won atleast one championship.  The Sixers have been ok, but nothing stellar.  The Eagles have had some really good teams, but seemed to always be one playmaker short.  The Phillies had to endure that run that the Braves were on.  And the Flyers would have won a cup in the Lindros Era if managment would have gotten them a real goaltender.

  9. What?  The Flyers have won Stanley Cups before - last time repeating in '74 and '75

    shame on you!

    LOL

I believe they were the first of the expansion teams (not of the Original Six) to win the Cup - well, of the professional NHL era anyways, other teams won before the Cup went pro.
