Philip Golding records another second-place finish on the European Senior Tour
The run of second-place finishes continues for the English golfing star, Philip Golding, as he carded a six-under par tournament score at the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open and missed out his maiden win on the European Senior Tour.
Last week, he lost to Anders Forsbrand at the SSE Scottish Senior Open and bounced back strongly with an eight-under par 64 in the first round on Friday, at the Conwy Golf Club, in Caernarvonshire.
His opening round included a run of eight consecutive birdies – most by any player in the history of the tour. Moreover, he recorded nine birdies on the last 10 holes that he played in regulation.
However, he failed to keep his momentum going into the second round and faltered for a two-over par score. Yet, he had a one-stroke lead over Barry Lane, entering the final round on Sunday.
He got off to a poor start and recorded two bogeys on the first three holes that he played. A couple of birdies afterwards allowed him to make a comeback in the game.
However, he did not record enough birdies to make it to the top of the leaderboard at the end of the tournament.
“I got off to a poor start bogey the first and the third hole,” said Golding, who signed for a level par 72. “I had hoped to make a few birdies early on, but Barry played lovely and he had a career shot to 17”.
He also stated that his disappointed shrugged off when he thought of earning two second-place finishes in two weeks. Moreover, a record in his first season on the tour was something more than enough to him.
“Obviously I’m disappointed, but its two second place finishes in two events at the start of my Senior Tour career and a course record here again this week,” he said.
“So you have to take the positives,” he added. “My aim was to get in the top 18 on the Order of Merit for the end of the season and I’m 17th now, so it’s been a good start”.
