Philip Golding relishes the opportunity to return to the MCB Tour Championship
Philip Golding of England expressed his wish to finish the 2012 European Seniors Tour on a high note by winning the season-ending MCB Tour Championship, slated to start from December 7, 2012.
The Englishman, who joined the 50-and-over tour earlier this season, currently lists 16th in the European Seniors Tour Order of Merit and now plans to improve his standing by the end of the year.
The MCB Tour Championship is the same tournament that he won in 1996 before it was sanctioned with the Seniors Tour.
This year, he will be making his first start as a senior member and wishes to repeat his heroics of 1996 once again at the Constance Belle Mare Plage.
He is currently enjoying a great rookie season on the tour, especially because of the two second-place finishes in a row that came in the SSE Scottish Senior Open and the Speedy Services Wales Senior Open.
Other than that, he also has top-17 finishes in each of the last three tournaments that he played on the tour.
The last tournament that he played was the French Riviera Masters, where he tied for the 17th position, after carding an even-par score.
With only two tournaments left on the Seniors Tour roster, Golding still has the chance of making it to the top-10 in the Order of Merit.
Talking to the Seniors Tour’s official website, he explained that he was invited to play the event in 1996 for the first time and he came out of the field as a victor.
He then participated in the event a number of times later. However, he was then forced to miss the tournament each year, as it was added to the Seniors Tour roster.
This year, he turned 50 and is now eligible to contend in the event, which he ranks one of his favourites.
He said: “I was invited to play in 1996 by the secretary of the PGA at the time, David Wright, and won it. From that I was invited to the Gene Sarazen World Open for a couple of years, and was also invited back to Mauritius every year, which was great because
it’s a beautiful place to be”.
He added: “Even when it became an event for Seniors and I couldn’t play, I went to the south-west part of the island to play, and last year I was invited to play in the tournament Pro-Am, even though I hadn’t turned 50”.
Golding has substantial experience of playing at the Constance Belle Mare Plage and expects to use his knowledge about the venue course to record a victory in the season-ending tournament.
According to him, accuracy with the driver will be the key to success in Mauritius. Moreover, the players will have to use their drivers a number of times during the tournament.
