Philip Goold and Tayler Brothers prevail in Round 2 of ASP 4-Star Vans Pier Classic – Surfing News
America’s Philip Goold and his fellow countryman Tayler Brothers emerged triumphant in their respective Round 2 (Round of 128) heats of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Vans Pier Classic that continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in
California, America, on Wednesday, March 28.
The successful result in their Round 2 heats served to add both Goold and Brothers into the third round (Round of 96). America’s Blake Jones and Japan’s Rikiya Kitada clinched runner-up positions in the first and second heat respectively to advance through
into the third round.
The ASP 4-Star event played host to veteran competitors, local standouts and international talent. The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site turned out to be pretty demanding, with the frequency of decent waves turning out to be quite low.
As the first heat got underway, the 20-year-old Goold continued to look impressive, collecting a couple of decent waves to post a 6.50 and 7.60 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 14.10 points. The score proved to be decisive, taking him through
into the next round.
“I’m stoked, my first heat was the first heat of the whole contest so that was a little nerve wracking, but this heat was much more consistent with waves,” Goold said. “I just sat to the south of everybody and sat there by myself and picked off a couple
of rights that I saw. They were running a bit more, not just offering one hit on the outside.”
Jones advanced through into the next round as well after securing runner-up place with a heat-total of 9.87 points, which included a 5.50 and 4.37-point wave.
Sweden’s Freddie Meadows finished in third place with a heat-total of 7.80 points, whereas Hawaii’s Makai McNamara rounded out the bottom position with a two-wave total of 5.77 points, which included a penalty for interference. Both the surfers found themselves
removed from the contention for the event title.
The second heat of Round 2 saw Brothers walk away with the win after finishing with a heat-total of 9.50 points, which included a 3.83 and 5.67-point wave.
Kitada successfully extended his life in the event as well after scoring a 5.00 and 3.80 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 8.80 points.
Australia’s Dane Bird and America’s Dillon Perillo rounded out the bottom-two positions after finishing with a heat-total of 5.93 and 3.63 points respectively.
