Philip Hide retires
Philip Hide has called an end to his plans to ride until the end of the year and officially announced that he is now retired. He hasn’t raced since April, but the 37-year-old jockey had been planning on
renewing his licence.
“I was not planning on riding much beyond December anyway and with the delay I thought there wasn’t much point in coming back for a month,” said Hide.
A recent delay in the application process, on top of some minor health issues, was enough of a push for Hide to call an end to his 20-year-long horse-racing career, which has produced more than 400 winners
despite frequent interruptions due to injury. He will continue as the assistant trainer to Gary Moore.
“It was never going to be an easy decision, but I had a few issues with my body parts and it was not possible to make a comeback,” said Hide. “I saw Dr. Turner [BHA chief medical adviser] and there were
a few things out of my control, so I decided to withdraw my licence application.”
Hide’s first time riding a winning horse was in May 1991 at Fontwell and has since ridden 412 other winners in Britain and several in France, including Deep Sensation, Topsham Bay and Brief Gale and won
the SunAlliance Chase on the latter in 1995.
“I am pleased he has decided to quit as he is not getting any younger and he has a good job with Gary,” said Josh Gifford. “After that fall at Cheltenham I thought he might give up, but he did come back
and he did very well. We had a lot of fun together. I thought he would go to the very top and he very nearly did. He did very well, rode us a lot of winners and he was a bloody good jockey.”
