Philip Rivers thinks San Diego Chargers have “even greater hunger” to play well next season – NFL News
In the past two seasons, San Diego Chargers have been fairly poor to say the least, but their quarterback Philip Rivers says that this under performance will fuel the team to perform well in the upcoming season.
Rivers was talking to reporters on Thursday, June 21, 2012. He said:
"I think having been out of the postseason two years in a row there's a maybe even greater hunger to get back to playing in January. If there is such thing as having more of a sense of urgency, then that certainly has been felt because of the outcome of
the past two seasons."
These comments have come at a time when Chargers are deeply criticised by their fans for not reaching the playoffs for a second consecutive year.
The organisation, the administration, the coaching staff and the whole roster know that too, and the 2012 season could be a do-or-die for many of them.
Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has been in the forefront on criticising himself and his team. Since Smith has taken up the position of GM, Chargers have not been able to win even any conference championship.
While critically evaluating himself, Smith said:
“But I got hired to win a world championship and I haven’t done it. In my view, it’s not going at all well. When I sit back and assess myself, I’m disappointed. Nine years and no world championship, five trips to the postseason and five failures, and I don’t
like it.”
Moreover, these two seasons have come at a time when Rivers should have been at his peak. Last season, Rivers scored 27 touchdowns and threw 20 interceptions covering 4,624 yards and getting a quarterback rating of 88.7.
It has been worrying to see blooming years of Rivers’ career being wasted. He will turn 31 this year.
This could be of great benefit for both Rivers and Chargers as every coming season could be the last opportunity for Rivers to win the championship and he will give his best shot to end his career on a memorable note.
Furthermore, Chargers must also bolster their defence which did worse than ever thought.
The only encouraging factor for the Chargers for the upcoming season is that they have probably the best quarterback in the American Football Conference (AFC) West.
Although Chargers were one of the most gifted sides few seasons ago, things are a bit different now.
