Philipp Kohlschreiber defeats Jonathan De Veigy in opening round – Moselle Open 2011
Rated at number 45 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany won his opening round matchup at the Moselle Open, outplaying the French qualifier, Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy,
on Wednesday night.
The contest was played on the indoor hard courts of the Arenes de Metz, in the city of Metz, France, with the seventh seeded German tearing apart the local hopes by registering a straight sets victory against De Veigy at 6-4, 7-6(4).
Kohlschreiber took one hour and twenty six minutes of play to conclude his victory and earned a place in the second round of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament. The German raced through the first set without any serious resistance
from the French qualifier but had to manoeuvre through the next set tie breaker to register his 26th victory of the running year.
The 27-year-old German belted 57 per cent of his serve on target and cracked in 10 thudding aces in the matchup. He coughed five double faults as well but clinched 35 out of 45 first serve points to compensate for them. De Veigy
closely followed him by seizing 34 out of his 38 first serve points but the French failed to record a single serve break in the entire match. He had five break points in the contest but squandered away all the precious opportunities in the contest to finish
on the losing side in the end.
The only serve break of the matchup came from the racquet of Kohlschreiber in the fifth game of the opener, with the German breaking into a vital lead of 4-2 early in the set. The seventh seeded German held his lead to close out
the first set at 6-4, getting 1-0 in the contest.
De Veigy held serve throughout the second set and the score board kept ticking on even terms. A tie breaker round was imposed in the second set after the scores got dead locked at 6-6. De Veigy lost his way in the decider once
again and gifted a couple of mini-breaks to Kohlschreiber to let him away with victory.
The German sealed victory at 7-6(4), to get a berth in the second round of the Moselle Open, where he will take on the Dutch qualifier, Igor Sijsling, for a place in the quarter-finals. Sijsling stood victorious against Grigor
Dimitrov of Bulgaria, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round of the tournament.
