Philipp Kohlschreiber eases past Fabio Fognini to reach round three – Rogers Cup 2012
Seeded 12th in this event, Philipp Kohlschreiber from Germany trashed the Italian qualifier, Fabio Fognini, in straight sets at the Rogers Cup 2012 on Wednesday. He summed up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the world number 66 to breeze into the round
of 16 at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event held in Toronto, Canada.
The German seed took an hour to triumph over Fognini in their second battle against each other. After earning the limelight, Kohlschreiber assertively advanced into the third round and improved to a 1-0 lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the
25-year-old.
The German number one thundered into this Emirates Airline US Open Series event. After the Italian held his serve in the opening game, Kohlschreiber unleashed flurry of forehands to wipe out the following five games in a row. The German then held his serve
once more and eventually carved out the opener with a 6-2 win. He blocked both breakpoints he faced and converted two out of four break chances to his advantage.
Kohlschreiber repeated his winning ways in the following set as he reeled off five games after the Italian held his serve in the first game. The German then plucked his serve once more and subsequently sealed the set by winning six games to two. He brushed
off all three breakpoints he encountered and cashed in both break chances to earn the fame.
The 18th ranked Kohlschreiber clobbered a better first serve share of 65 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 60 per cent and acceptably marked 25 out of 34 points on it.
The German will face off eighth seeded John Isner in the pre-quarters. The American number one stomped over Spain’s Pablo Andujar in straight sets to set up this battle.
The third seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, face a bitter reality later that day. He crashed out to his compatriot, Jeremy Chardy, in brutal straight sets in his opening match.
Chardy on the other hand set up a date with the Spanish contestant, Marcel Granollers. The Spaniard also registered an upset victory against 15th seeded Florian Mayer to secure this spot.
