Philipp Kohlschreiber trashes Alejandro Falla in the third round – Australian Open 2012
In a match between two 28-year-old veterans, Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber stomped over the Colombian ace, Alejandro Falla, in straight sets at the Australian Open 2012 on Friday. He manifested a 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over the world number 71 to book
a place in the fourth round of this major hard court tournament held in Melbourne, Australia.
Ranked 41st in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Kohlschreiber outmuscled the Colombian in their fourth meeting. He not only maintained his winning record against Falla but also inched closer to
bag $2.3 million prize money.
The highly positive German confidently stepped on court number three at the Melbourne Park and earned the desiderated break in the opening game. He maintained firm in the remaining match and bagged entire serves. Kohlschreiber then sealed the set with a
6-3 victory after breaking Falla’s serve again in the last game. He fended off the only breakpoint he encountered and converted two out of five break chances to his advantage.
Kohlschreiber kept momentum rolling into the second set and got the coveted break in the fourth game, eventually going 4-1 up. He blocked the only breakpoint he came across to keep his entire serves. The German then cashed in his second break opportunity
in the last game and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
In the last set, both stars played their best tennis as they capitalised on their only break chance and dragged the set to a tie-breaker. However, the German was all over the court in it and eventually bagged the set with a 7-6(3) win.
Overall, the high spirited German committed several unforced errors and clobbered a lower first serve share of 52 percent as opposed to Falla’s 66 percent. However, he registered an impressive 38 out o 48 points on it and smacked 31 massive winners, finishing
the match with 110 points in contrast with the Colombian’s 81.
The German will next confront the winner of the match between 11th seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, and the Taiwanese competitor, Yen-Hsun Lu. Kohlschreiber needs to lift his game in order to overcome resilience posed by a seeded player.
