Mario Gomez scored two sensational goals against rivals Netherlands to book his side’s place in the quarter finals.

The sides faced each other in a competitive match for the first time in 8 years. A lot was at stake as the competition in ‘Group of death’ intensified. Netherlands were without a single point after their loss to Denmark and needed
a win to get their campaign back on track.
The stage was set for a mouth watering clash as the tournament favourites lined up against each other in Kharkiv. Although Bert van Marwijk’s men were expected to match Die Mannschaft in every department, but things did not go
according to the script.
Mario Gomez decided to rip up the script when he gave his side the lead after skilfully controlling Schweinsteiger’s pass to turn and finish past Stekelenburg. The Bayern Munich striker doubled his side’s lead in no time and condemned
the Dutch a second successive defeat.
Gomez’s Bayern Munich teammate hailed his heroics in Die Nationalelf’s 2-1 victory over the Dutch. He believes the inform hit-man has got a lot in his locker, and is currently the best striker. Lahm thinks the striker has the potential
to fire his side to European glory.
"The tournament isn't over yet and Mario still has a lot to contribute. He is a top striker that we know.  The goals he scored today were world class,” Lahm is quoted as saying in an interview.
The former Stuttgart striker is the tournaments joint top scorer with 3 goals from 2 games and he will be looking to emulate his domestic goal scoring record. Gomez answered his critics in the most appropriate manner, and Joachim
Low should be thankful to Mehmet Scholl for motivating his striker by launching a scathing attack on him.
Although Bert van Marwijk’s men pulled back a goal through Robin Van Persie, but some gutsy defending from the Germans killed of any hopes of a late Dutch comeback.
The Dutch however were a shadow of the side that reached the final of the 2010 World Cup and played like 11 individuals whose egos were big enough to undermine the whole team.
