Philipp Petzschner, Florian Mayer cruise to the second round of BMW Open
Philipp Petzschner beats Ivan Dodig 6-1, 6-4
World number 76 Philipp Petzschner of Germany thrashed world number 44 Ivan Dodig of Croatia in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 in the first round at the BMW Open in Munich on Tuesday. Petzschner took just one hour and eight minutes to
upset his higher ranked opponent in a one sided contest.
The German number 2 broke Dodig twice in the opening set, allowing his opponent to win only one game and winning the set 6-1. Petzschner fired a couple of aces and 50 percent of the first serves in the opening set, winning a whopping
90 percent of the points on them. The 27-year-old capitalized on two of the three break point opportunities he created in the first set.
Dodig was looking to stage a comeback in the second set as he broke Petzschner in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. However, the German broke back in the fifth game and won his next service game to tie the score at 3-3. Petzschner
broke again in the ninth game and served out the set at 5-4. The right handed converted both break points he received in the second set.
The German said, after the match, “It’s my home tournament. I was born originally in Bavaria so it’s always nice coming back here. It was a pretty solid match I played today, so I’m really happy.”
Petzschner will take on top seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in the second round.
Florian Mayer downs Steve Darcis 6-1, 6-2
Germany’s top player Florian Mayer, ranked 35th in the world, crushed world number 136 Steve Darcis of Belgium in straight sets to move to the second round. Mayer dropped just three games in the entire match, winning
the contest 6-1, 6-2 in just 59 minutes.
In the opening set, five of the seven service games were broken and it was Mayer who claimed four of them, clinching the set 6-1. The German hit 63 percent of the first serves, winning 67 percent of the points on them in the first
set. The 27-year-old won 68 percent of the first service return points in the opening set. Mayer converted four of the six break points he received in the first set.
The German broke Darcis three times in the second set and won it 6-2. Mayer hit a single ace and 48 percent of the first serves in the second set. The right-handed won 83 percent of the first service points in the second set.
Mayer is slated to face Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili, ranked 79th in the world, in the second round. Gabashvili battled past Rainer Schuettler of Germany in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round.
