Philipp Petzschner vs. Florent Serra
German Philipp Petzschner outplayed French Florent Serra in the first round of the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open. The German took one hour and ten minutes to ensure his spot in the next round.
In their third meeting on tour, Petzschner had an excellent start to the game. Petzschner fired in 5 aces and 40 per cent of the first serves. Petzschner had a remarkable winning percentage out of his first serves as he converted
100 per cent of them. Whereas Serra delivered 54 per cent of the first serves converting a poor percentage of 38 per cent from them.
Petzschner converted 100 per cent of the break point opportunities whereas Serra lagged behind with inadequate 50 per cent.
 Ultimately Serra could not recover the loss and suffered a breadstick defeat in the first set.
In the final set, Petzschner delivered 34 per cent of the first serves, winning 50 per cent of points from them. Whereas Serra took the lead with 53 per cent points out of his first serves. This time it was Serra’s forte to save
33 percent of the breakpoint opportunities since Petzschner failed to save any of them. However, Petzschner was able to clinch the final set 7-5.
Petzschner will meet world number 10 Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the next round. This will be their second meeting on courts with Petzschner leading their head-to-head 1-0.
Rainer Schuettler vs. Ryan Harrison
Germany’s Rainer Schuettler defeated his local Ryan Harrison in two straight sets 7-5, 6-2 at the 2011 Sony Ericsson Open.
Receiving their first meeting on courts Schuettler fired in 2 aces and double faulted 3 times. He struck 65 per cent of the first serves, winning 61 per cent of points from them. On the other hand Harrison landed with single ace
and committed 3 double faults. He delivered 53 per cent of first serves and won 65 per cent of points from them.
Schuettler converted 75 per cent of his break point opportunities and took the first set breaking his opponent in the 12th game.
In the second set, Schuettler delivered 71 per cent of his first serves converting 80 per cent from them while his opponent double faulted twice and converted 57 per cent of his first serves into points. Schuettler didn’t manage
to convert a single break point opportunity while Harrison converted 2 out of 4. However, the German was able to do away with his opponent in not more than one hour and twenty six minutes.
Schuettler will play Gilles Simon of France in the second round. The pair has already met each other six times on courts, with Simon leading their head-to-head record 5-1.
