Philipp Petzschner defeats compatriot Dustin Brown: BNP Paribas Open 2011 - Review
Philip Petzschner of Germany defeated compatriot Dustin Brown at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday. The pair met for their first round match at the 2011 BNP Paribas Open.
Ranked 65th in the world, Petzschner is the fourth highest ranked German on tour. Turned professional in 2001, the German only has one title to his name. Petzschner reached his career high ranking in 2009 when he finally
broke into the top 50, ranked 35th in the world then.
The lower ranked German currently ranks 100th in the world. Originally a Jamaican player, Brown defected to Germany after the Jamaican Tennis Association (JTA) failed to generate funds for the player.
In their first ever meeting, the 26 year old Petzschner, banking on his higher ranking, was able to clinch an easy 6-4 victory for himself in the first set, going one up in the set score.
The first set saw the 26 year old landing 57 per cent of the first serves managing an impressive 75 per cent win on it. His opponent was much weaker as far as conversion of first serves into points was concerned, registering a
mere 55 per cent figure.
Although Petzschner failed to save the one break point he faced, the higher ranked German was able to successfully convert 2 of 6 break opportunities. It was this very statistic that allowed Petzschner to take the lead and serving
in the tenth game, clinch the set 6-4.
Petzschner gaining confidence from the first set win was all set to dominate the second one as well. However, this time around he faced resistance from his opponent who fought back with a 76 per cent win on first serves. Keeping
the score ticking on even terms, Petzschner’s slightly higher 79 per cent win on serve provided him with the edge that he needed to wrap up a straight sets victory. Petzschner registered a close 7-5 win in the second set.
Sealing his victory against Brown, Petzschner now leads the pair’s career head-to-head by 1-0.
Petzschner now moves on ahead to face the 29th seeded Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela. A seed at the event here, Chela received a bye into the second round of the event. Sporting a 6-7 win loss mark for the season, Petzschner
is currently on a disappointing run in the season so far. Going on past records, the German will have to up his game if he has any intentions of defeating his next opponent.
