Philipp Petzschner overwhelms Mischa Zverev in opening round – Malaysian Open 2011
Hitting the hard indoor court today, Tuesday, 27th September, Philipp Petzschner of Germany ousted compatriot Mischa Zverev as the 1st round matches of the Malaysian Open 2011 continued at the Purta Stadium,
Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur. The two fought for an hour and twelve minutes before the world No.66 bagged the set 7-5, 6-3 and walked into the 2nd stage of the ATP Tour 250 event.
Comparatively, the two had a huge disparity in rankings. Adding to that Zverev had won just one fixture out of the last 10. Winning the opening round Petzschner went ahead in head-to-head score, 3-2, and stepped forward in the
event.
Taking their ends, Zverev won the service toss and opened up the match. Outdoing the 24-year-old, Zverev, in the opening game of the match, the 27-year-old world No.66 went on slamming a breakpoint and led the match 1-0. Serving
out game 2, Petzschner bombed another breakpoint in game 3 and led 3 games to zero.
With the 27-year-old scorching up high on the scoreboard winning game 4 as well, the lower ranked German finally rolled down his part of the scoreboard winning game 5, 1-4. The set twisted when Zverev broke-served-broke the world
No.66 and went on levelling the scores for the first time in the set, 4-4.
With one game win each the two stood equal once again at 5-5 before the 27-year-old broke again and served out game 12, 7-5, and the set to lead the match 1-0.
Igniting the second set, Zverev comfortably held his serve to go 1-0 in the set. Following the younger German, Petzschner levelled up instantly and stood to return again. With a fantastic backhand winner, the world No.66 broke
and served to extend his lead to 3-1.
Cutting down the lead, world No.170, Zverev, went on winning game 5, however, could not break back. Maintaining his lead, Petzschner served out games on his serve and led the score to 5-3. With one game left to win for the world
No.66, Zverev presented his counterpart with a win as he lost game 9 on his serve leading to the 27-year-old winning the set, 6-3.
An effortless straight set win for Petzschner led him to chair the second round of the Malaysian Open 2011 where he will now play the winner of the match between Kei Nishikori and Teymuraz Gabashvili.
