Philippine Badminton Association hopes Rexy Mainaky can put national team on track
The Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) is dancing on air after hiring former Malaysian coach Rexy Mainaky and hopes that the new coach will guide their national team to glory in the arena.
Former World and Olympic Champion Mainaky resigned from the post of Doubles head coach of Malaysia and joined PBA as national coaching director. He has arrived in the Philippines where he received a warm welcome from the national body.
The secretary general of PBA Albee Benitez tagged his appointment as an achievement and assured him full support of the Association in his master plan of putting national team on track.
He said, “We just hired a good coach and that's the main plan. But we don't expect to win the gold overnight. It will take time. So we have to give him full support and hope he delivers.”
The badminton guru Rexy Mainaky has indicated to travel around the country to discover new talent and his main focus will be teenagers who will ultimately represent the country at the international level.
Mainaky, who accept the challenge to start from scratch, has a four-year plan in his mind as he did not promise an over-night transformation. He declared that he will assemble young Philippines’ players for 2016 Olympics.
Mainaky said, “Hopefully I can build a Philippine team for the 2016 Olympics. That is my plan. if I can't produce then I leave. But badminton is not all about good coach. It's about teamwork.”
Rexy Mainaky has vast experience of coaching in England and Malaysia. He performed exceptionally well as Men’s Doubles coach of Malaysia and guided male duo Kien Keat-Boon Heong to new heights.
Now PBA is also looking to him to watch its players’ steps and elevate their skills. The Vice President of Association Jejomar Binay hoped that foreign coach will shoulder his responsibility.
Binay said, “He will help us realize our dream. By all means we wanted to get him. So, this is a milestone for us. He has the track record and we are optimistic.”
After resigning from Malaysia, Rexy Mainaky received coaching offers from other countries like Indonesia and Russia who were offering handsome amount also but highly qualified coach preferred Philippines over these established countries of badminton world.
However, both parties did not disclose the signing amount and other details of this four-year contract.
