Philippine Open Pool Championship 2011: Day one - Results
The first day of Philippine Open Pool Championship 2011 ended with some easy encounters, a couple of topsy-turvy affairs and a couple of close contests. In the arena of World Trade Centre
in Manila, 64 men and 32 women were lined up for the first session of the tournament on Thursday, April 7.
One of the upsets on the first day was the defeat of current world 10-ball champion, Mika Immonen against the Chinese, Li Wen Lo by score of 6-9. Lo is currently ranked at Number 105 and
if he continues the same good performance in the event, he will definitely improve his ranking. He will face Marcus Chamat, who beat Rudy Susanto 9-5, in the first round on Friday, April 8.
Billiard Congress of America (BCA) number one and world 10-ball champion, Mika Immonen, will meet Rudy Susanto of Indonesia in the one loss side of the event draw where the loser gets
eliminated from the tournament.
The BCA number two, Ralf Souquet, who clinched the 2011 Open 10-Ball Pro Championship title a couple of weeks ago, had a close encounter with Philippine’s Carlo Biado, who entered the
draw as a qualifier. Though Souquet crashed out of the Euro Championship Straight Pool event at the hands of Roman Pruchay of Russia by 2-125, this time he booked his place in the first round against Bashar Hussain Abdul Majeed after he managed to triumph
over the Pilipino with the score-line 9-8 in the beginning session.
The current world 8-Ball champion, Dennis Orcollo of Philippine, was set up against compatriot, Demosthenes Pulpul and defeated him by 9-7 to storm into the next round to play against
Allan Cuartero.
In other important matches of the day in men’s field, USA number one, Shane Van Boening lost to a Japanese pool player, Naoyuki Oi, 4-9 while top seed, Antonio Lining defeated former English
Billiards world champion, Robbie Foldvari 9-7 after facing a tough fight from his competitor.
In the women’s session, a couple of major upsets were seen as cueists displayed some high quality potting skills. One of the important matches was played between world number two, Allison
Fisher and a Chinese qualifier, Wu Jing. The Chinese youngster gave pretty hard competition to the veteran during the match and in the end she took it by 9-7.
On the other hand, the world number one, Ga Young Kim of Korea easily crushed Aradhana Nail 9-0 and clinched a whitewash victory in the preliminary round to go head-to-head with Yun-Mi
Lim in the first round. In another whitewash contest, Austria’s Jasmin Ouschan thrashed Veronique Menard of Canada 9-0 in the same stage.
The Philippine Open Pool Championship 2011 will run until April 11 with a total prize money of over $175,000, which will be awarded to both men’s and women’s divisions. The tournament
is featuring the best players from around the world including 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball champions from both divisions.
