Philips TV sound on but picture fades to black

Question

Philips TV. was working fine but now picture fades to black. sound is on. If we turn unit off/on picture returns...but will fade again. can fade one minute later or ten minutes later...unit id about 3.5 years old. 64 inch. (old style not flat screen)
