Phillip Archer bags his third Challenge Tour title, the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic
The two-time Challenge Tour winner, Phillip Archer bagged the latest tour event, the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic after a thrilling nail-biting competition on the final day.
The veteran pulled in a strong two-under, 70 at the scenic Country Club de Barranquilla in Colombia, birdying the last hole and avoided a Playoff at the last moment.
The Warrington man started off the day with two birdies on the front nine before falling for the first bogey of the round at par-three, 8th.
He made the turn to card one more birdie before he stumbled on another bogey to lose his grasp.
He kept on a low profile for the rest of the back nine until he came face-to-face with the last hole of the round, where he had fallen for a bogey on the second day.
Archer needed a birdie on the 18th to ward off a Playoff threat and lift the title.
Archer explained, “I was thinking when I stood over the putt that the hole owed me something because I had two fives and a six there before that, I had pulled my drive into a similar position where I was the last three days. I caught a half-decent lie this time though and had a full swing so I was able to get something on it and managed to nudge it to the front edge”.
Landing on the rough with his drive, Archer has lost all hope of winning the title out rightly but his approach landed at the edge of the green, helping him pull a birdie at the last hole.
He won with a tight margin of just one stroke to lift the title. He added, “I went through my full routine which I had done all the way around and luckily I holed it”.
Englishman Chris Lloyd finished for a joint second place, alongside Orum Morten Madsen, trailing the leader by one stroke.
Lloyd was fairly disappointed even after pulling in a majestic five-under, 67 on the final day.
Archer has now surged to the top of the Money List on the Challenge Tour, with total earnings of €33,946. He won € 29,947 with this victory.
