Phillip Archer contemplating another strong finish at Madeira Islands Open on Challenge Tour next month
Englishman Phillip Archer is all set to put the Santo da Serra ablaze with his firebrand golf at next month’s Madeira Islands Open in Spain in order to carry on with his fiery start of the season.
Winner of the Pacific Rubiales Colombia Classic in March, Archer has done a splendid job in the current season and is currently on top of the money list on the Challenge Tour.
Madeira Islands Open, considered as one of the major events on the Challenge Tour, is one of the most sought after titles amongst the Tour players and the triumphant normally gets the tour card for the mainstream European Tour for the next season.
The event also boosts of the biggest prize money on the tour mounting to a mammoth €675,000 and Archer considers it the main attraction for all the players on the tour.
He said, “Madeira is like a Major for the Challenge Tour players because of the much bigger purse than the majority of the other tournaments on the schedule. I’m glad to be going there in good form and at the top of the Rankings, and fingers crossed I can
cement that position with another good performance”.
Archer is also the defending champion of the Allianz Open Côtes d’Armor Bretagne but due to the clash of the schedule between the two events, Archer laments the fact that he will not be able to defend his title in Brittany.
He added, “It’s a shame Madeira is the same week as Brittany as it means I won’t be able to defend my title. But I can’t turn down a €675,000 prize fund”.
The 40-year-old Englishman landed a blistering start of the season in the opening three events on the Challenge Tour, pulling in a third at Barclays Kenya Open and 11th at Gujurat Kensville Challenge.
He is currently leading the money list on the tour and is €10,000 ahead of the nearest contender Seve Benson.
Archer, considered as one of the senior players on the tour, turned professional in the year 1991 and has played on the mainstream European Tour for considerable period of time before losing his card in 2010.
