Phillip Chew, Jamie Subandhi make way in pre quarter-finals of US Open 2012
Mixed Doubles team Phillip Chew-Jamie Subandhi overwhelmed Andres Lopez-Rulien Yeh to earn their right of entry in pre quarter-finals of Yonex OCBC US Open GPG on July 3, 2012.
This first round match was staged in Orange County Badminton Club (OCBC) and both pairs entertained the audience for 35 minutes before ending this show with 16-21, 21-16 and 20-22.
The victorious duo set the foundation of their supremacy by winning the first set of the match and then emerged as Champions by surviving a competitive fight in the decider.
Meanwhile, Andres and Rulien squandered a golden opportunity of 2-1 victory and crashed out despite of bagging the second set.
This three-set battle heated up straight away in opening game when both teams made every effort to gain an immediate advantage.
In first half, Phillip and Jamie established an upper hand with 4-2 total but this lead was not everlasting as the opposing duo counter-balanced the situation with 8-6.
At this stage, the US couple switched on the best in them and placed a respectable figure of 11-9 before the interval.
Later part completely belonged to the twosome of Phillip-Jamie as they made swift progress to a notable margin of 18-12.
This six-point difference proved a final blow to their rivals and they clinched first set with 21-16 score on the board.
Andres and Rulien, who belong to Mexico and USA respectively, forged fruitful chemistry to keep the contest alive.
They established an unassailable lead by registering 5-1 total in no time. They clinched four points in a row to reach a dominating position of 9-2.
Though, they lost their grip when their competitors narrowed the gap with 12-14 but Andres-Rulien did not panic and finished this race with significant lead in 21-16 margin.
Third segment proved best part of the match as both teams chased each other all the way to game point situation.
The match kept swinging between them until last moment but local duo tipped the scale in their favour with a tight yet decisive result of 22-20.
Phillip and Jamie will now test their skills against high ranked compatriot pair Eric Go-Paula Lynn Obanana in second round of the home event.
