Phillip Lahm demands Bayern Munich to improve defence
Bayern Munich captain Phillip Lahm has impressed upon his club to improve their performance in the defence.
He has asked the coach Louis van Gaal to alter some tactics in order to make the team powerful in defence. The German voiced his concern as the Munich giants have been conceding a lot of goals recently and have had a poor 2010-11 season after winning the
double in the previous campaign.
Lahm said the coach will have to rethink the team strategy and that they should stop dropping points in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. He added that his team had already made too many mistakes in the ongoing season and there is no room for
more now.
“We have to reconsider the way we build up play. We have already spilled too many points and conceded too many goals because of mistakes we made building up play from the back,” the captain said in an interview.
The German international said that Bayern’s defence takes too many risks of going forward and that creates problems for them in the end.
Bayern have lost games after being in winning situations and the game against 1. FC Koln is a prime example. The Bavarians were leading 3-0 at half-time and ended up being on the losing side.
Lahm added that the defenders should be looking to clear the ball rather than looking for teammates and keeping possession.
“We often take too many risks in defence. On other occasions, we make life unnecessarily difficult for ourselves. We shouldn't always insist on looking for a teammate when we have the ball at the back. Every now and then, it's necessary to just clear the
ball and then fight for the loose ball in midfield or up front,” Lahm said.
Bayern are currently in fourth place with 42 points, 16 points adrift from the league leaders Borussia Dortmund and are virtually out of the Bundesliga title race.
The Bavarians have crucial games ahead as they face Schalke 04 at home and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hannover-96-c39492 away. The UEFA Champions League runners-up of the previous season could be out of the competition next year if they fail to be in the top three at the end of the season.
