Phillip Price surges to the top at Trophee Hassan II: Round Two Leaderboard Part-1
Three-time European Tour winner Phillip Price has now surged to the top of the leaderboard through the halfway mark of Trophee Hassan II and is all set to clinch another European Tour title after a lapse of nine years.
45-year-old Price soared into contention earlier in the day while many players in the field were not able to complete their second rounds due to high winds.
The play was suspended for five-and-a-half hours as the scenic Golf du Palais Royal of the Royal Palace of Agadir was lashed out by strong winds in the middle of the day.
Welshman Price, who pulled in an impressive four-under 68, on the opening day, capitalised on his early gains.
He carded anther strong six-under 66 to soar to the top of the leaderboard through the halfway mark.
A smiling Price said, “I was delighted with that today and I was very surprised by how calm it became throughout the day after this morning. It was really windy when we started so to go out there and shoot six under is really pleasing”.
Price broke headlines back in the year 2002, when he defeated the rampaging Phil Mickelson in the final individual round of Ryder Cup to guide the European team to a phenomenal success.
He has been lurking in shadows since his last victory on the European Tour, The Smurfit European Open in 2003.
He added, "It is nice to feel that way again because it has been a long time since I have been anywhere near the top of the leaderboard.
"I just have to go back and relax now and wait till I have to get out there again because they will obviously have to finish the second round tomorrow morning".
Price started the day from back nine, and remained humble through the opening five holes of the day. He then shot in a birdie spree of three consecutive birdies before making the turn.
His front nine turned out to be equally impressive when he carded another three birdies on the front, without dropping a single shot throughout the day.
Price is among the grizzled lot of veterans on the European entourage and has been part of the field for almost two decades.
To be continued...
