Phillips Idowu has eyes set on the London Olympics
Phillips Idowu is a British athlete of Nigerian origin, who has gained considerable fame and respect in the arena of triple jumping. He belongs to the Belgrave Harriers, an athletic club based in London to which he owes most of his achievements.
The athlete has to his name the great honour and privilege of being crowned the World Champion at the 2008 World Indoor Champion while representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Another accolade that distinguishes him significantly from his competitors is that he is the current Commonwealth Games Champion. 2008 proved to be momentous for him otherwise as well, since the Beijing Olympics held in that year provided him with a shiny silver medal for Great Britain. Last year, he suffered from a grave knee injury which came in the way of defending his European indoor title. Yet, this British athlete did not allow this setback to get to him. He made a comeback by winning at the World Championships in Berlin as Phillips made the longest ever jump associated with any athlete in that year, as well as attaining a personal best of 17.73 meters.
The current year emerged to be even more rewarding for Phillips Idowu as he won the silver medal by improving his personal best distance in the triple jump arena to 17.81 meters at the Barcelona European Athletics Championships. This feat implies that he is currently the reigning World Champion as well as the European and Commonwealth Champion. While the experienced triple jumper is sufficiently relieved as well as overjoyed as a result of having another title associated with his name, his worries do not end over here. Being an athlete who was denied a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics held in 2008 by a distance of only five centimetres, Idowu is determined not to let history repeat itself at the upcoming London Olympics in 2012. He has realized winning gold at the London Olympics is certainly not an easy preposition but he also acknowledges the fact that he has two years to prepare ahead of the magnanimous event. He has currently set his eyes on nearing the 18 meters mark, which if achieved, will indefinitely seal his gold medal victory at the Olympics.
The recent win at the European Championships, together with an impressive new career best jump has certainly provided Phillips Idowu with several reasons to celebrate. However, it comes together with a lot of strings attached to it particularly the expectations associated with him in the London Olympics. With the memory of the Beijing Olympics still fresh in Idowu’s mind, Phillips has his eyes set in gaining the most. With a sufficient time period of two years well ahead of him, and an amazing victory at the European Championships, the motivation level of this athlete is soaring high. One hopes this becomes a strong aid in allowing him to attain the title he has been dreaming of ever since the commencement of his athletic career, namely an Olympic gold medal.
